Spotlight story: The BRICS

Every year, an association of five major emerging national economies meets to discuss future developments, the global economic situation, the Sustainable Development Goals, and mutually beneficial collaboration:

Brazil, Russia, India, China, and since 2010 also South Africa.

In 2018 it is South Africa’s honor to host the gathering in Johannesburg. Each summit results in a specific Declaration and Action Plan. In 2013, the BRICS members also decided on setting up the New Development Bank, empowered to lend up to $34 billion annually for infrastructure projects.  On July 25-27th the 10th BRICS Summit will run under the motto “BRICS in Africa: Collaboration for Inclusive Growth and Shared Prosperity in the 4th Industrial Revolution”.

Did you know: Barack Obama's Africa-Inspired Reading List

While traveling through the continent, Obama announced an Africa-Inspired Reading List on Facebook last week: “Over the years since, I’ve often drawn inspiration from Africa’s extraordinary literary tradition. As I prepare for this trip, I wanted to share a list of books that I’d recommend for summer reading, including some from a number of Africa’s best writers and thinkers – each of whom illuminate our world in powerful and unique ways.” Get the full list here.
