Spotlight story: There is a 70ha Oasis in the Desert
Just recently I learned about the truly unique story of the SEKEM Initiative in Egypt. It was founded already in 1977 by Dr. Ibrahim Abouleish, right in the most untypical place, the Egyptian desert about 60 km from Cairo. He turned 70 hectares (!) of desert land into a striving business by using biodynamic agricultural methods. Now, SEKEM has become a multifaceted agro-industrial group of companies and NGOs, including educational institutions like schools and even a university, as well as a Medical Center. By this, it’s regarded as a truly pioneering and world’s leading social business. Definitely, a model we all should get inspired by!
Did you know: A Continent of Superlatives (some examples)
- Africa has the world’s longest river, the Nile, with 4,132 miles,
which runs through 11 African countries. - Africa has the world’s largest desert, Sahara, which is nearly as big as the USA!
- The South African Rovos Rail is considered the most luxurious train in the world.
- The Serengeti (Tanzania) hosts the world’s largest wildlife migration on Earth with over 750,000 zebras marching ahead of 1.2 million wildebeest as they cross this amazing landscape.
- There are more people speaking French in Africa than in France!
- Most of the world’s fastest runners come from a single tribe in Kenya, Africa, called the “Kalenjins.”
“It always seems impossible until it’s done.”
