Spotlight story: Great Ideas and Challenges
Africa is basically confronted with any challenge possible under the sun. But this also means endless possibilities and unique chances. To give you some reference: more than 60 million Nigerians alone are unbanked. In Nigeria, 2.500 children under the age of five die every day caused by preventable diseases. Missing power grids, logistical bottlenecks, the latest water crises, and an ever-rising population, paint a picture of a rough status quo, but a hotbed for innovative solutions. Looking into some numbers, we see that the most tech startup related funding activity these days is happening in three big sectors:
1. Financial Inclusion (45%)
• Off-grid Tech
• InsureTech
• Fintech
2. Online & Mobile Consumer Services (42%)
• E/M/S – Commerce
• EdTech
• Personal Services
• HealthTech
3. B2B & Tech Adoption (13%)
• Enterprise
• Connectivity
Did you know: Africa has 442 Tech Hubs!
Based on the research done by GSMA, Africa has an immensely growing number of tech hubs throughout the whole continent. This includes Incubators & Accelerators, Coworking Spaces, and other tech hubs. The Top 5 countries are South Africa (59), Nigeria (55), Egypt (34), Kenya (30), and Ghana (55).
The Top 5 Ecosystem Cities:

2. Cape Town, South Africa: 26 Hubs
3. Nairobi, Kenya: 25 Hubs
4. Cairo, Egypt: 23 Hubs
